If I had a franc (or dollar, you get the idea) for every time someone told me they wanted to be a Medical Science Liaison (MSL), I’d be typing this from a beach in Bali.
It’s by far the most common role I get asked about. It’s like the MSL role has become the holy grail of biotech and pharma careers. And look, I get it—the job sounds amazing. You’re field-based, speaking with key opinion leaders, talking about science all day, and working on the cutting edge of medicine. What’s not to love?
But here’s the reality check: Breaking into an MSL role as your first step into industry is incredibly tough. Like... borderline impossible.
Ten to fifteen years ago? Sure, it was more accessible. Entry-level MSL roles existed, and you could work your way in with strong scientific credibility and some networking. Fast forward to now, and I’m seeing some wild job descriptions—think: PhD required, 10 years of experience, and sometimes even an MD thrown in for good measure.
So if you’re new to industry, or pivoting from academia, research, or clinical, you need to get creative.
MSL may not be the most realistic first step—but there are other field-based, science-focused roles that can give you similar vibes without requiring a decade of experience.
Let’s break down some real alternatives:
Want to be in the field and work with HCPs? Look into Sales Rep or Key Account Manager roles.Yes, they’re commercial—but hear me out. These roles teach you how to navigate healthcare systems, build relationships with HCPs, and manage territories—skills that are super transferable to MSL positions later on. And pharma loves people who understand the business side.
Love medical education and translating complex science? Explore roles like Medical Advisor, Medical Manager, or Scientific Communications Specialist. These positions let you stay close to the science while supporting strategy, training, and education efforts. You’ll build your credibility in Medical Affairs and gain exposure to cross-functional teams.
Obsessed with data and evidence-based content? Check out Medical Information Officer or Publications Manager roles. These are great for people who love detail, data integrity, and scientific accuracy. You’ll sharpen your writing and critical analysis skills, all while gaining experience in regulatory and compliance-heavy environments.
Now, don’t get me wrong—none of these roles are a walk in the park to land either. You still need to position yourself smartly, build your story, and sometimes take a stepping-stone job to get there.
But compared to the black hole that is entry-level MSL recruitment right now? You’ve got a much better shot.
TL;DR:
MSL is not the only path—and it definitely shouldn’t be your first one. There’s more than one way to break into biotech and pharma. Get strategic, explore your strengths, and don’t put all your eggs in the MSL basket.
You’ve got options. Now go explore them.
